The theme for this week’s Beautiful Beasties Network Project 52 is “Happy Face”…
Well, I think this theme was supposed to be geared more towards dogs, and we’ve certainly got lots of happy faces here at the ponderosa, but I just wasn’t able to get the shots I was looking for from my guys this week. So, while driving past a local farm, I spied these two beauties by the road. They were standing right at the fence, just BEGGING for me to stop and take their pictures! And, of course, you know me – I just couldn’t resist…
Now, I don’t know much about emus, except that they look pretty prehistoric, they’re extremely powerful, and they lay a HUGE, deep turquoise colored egg. Come to find out, emus are actually VERY curious – these two were immediately interested in me, and came right over to check me out as I crossed the road towards them. I *assume* they were happy to see me, but perhaps they were just looking for a hand out, I don’t know… Either way, I didn’t have anything to offer them. Apparently tho, if you apologize for coming unprepared, and ask them nicely to say “CHEESE!” for the camera, they’re more than willing to oblige! (Well, at least I can say THIS pair was…)
So, I ask you – are these “happy faces” or WHAT??? Who would have thought emus could be so photogenic???

This emu had a big broad head, and much thicker, frillier plumage around its neck – maybe a more mature emu, or possibly a male?

This emu had a much more refined shape to its head, and much less neck feathering – maybe a youngster, or a female?
P.S. Their eyes really ARE that color!
Now jump over to Unleashed! Pet Portraits in Victoria, BC to see Melissa’s version of this week’s theme! And don’t forget to click the link at the bottom of her page to get to the next blog in the ring – and be sure to keep clicking those links til you wind up back here! Enjoy!

Love it!
So fun! Great unique subjects and you captured them beautifully!
These are fantastic – what a surprise as I scrolled down the page! Really beautiful!
These are great!
Thanks all – I was worried I’d stick out like a sore thumb this week with photos of emus vs. dogs, but none of my canine friends wanted to cooperate!! And since the birds were willing, I thought, “Hey, why not?” They were just WAYYY too awesome to pass up!
